We are pleased to share the invitation to the upcoming workshop symposium “Foreign language education for an open society: Challenges for foreign language teaching and learning in times of democracy under threat”. The three-day event will take place from March 18 to 20, 2026 at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Aiming for intensive discussions and knowledge exchange, the event will also mark the kick-off for the development of a position paper on the role and responsibility of foreign language didactics (FLD) and foreign language teaching (FLT) in contemporary times.
The symposium will take into focus three central topics:
- Fundamental considerations and challenges for FLD and FLT in open societies
- Significance, function, and development of teaching materials and educational media
- Foreign language teachers’ and foreign language eductation researchers’ professionalism and implictions for language teacher education and professionalisation
The symposium will be organised in a workshop format. All participants will be asked to deliver a short input presentation. The call for proposals for presentations (abstract of approx. 300 words, exl. bibliography) will be open until September 30, 2025. Proposals should be sent to “englischdidaktik@hu-berlin.de”. Please note that the working language of the symposium will be German.
