Upcoming Workshop Symposium March 18 to 20, 2026

We are pleased to share the invitation to the upcoming workshop symposium “Foreign language education for an open society: Challenges for foreign language teaching and learning in times of democracy under threat”. The three-day event will take place from March 18 to 20, 2026 at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Aiming for intensive discussions and knowledge exchange, the event will also mark the kick-off for the development of a position paper on the role and responsibility of foreign language didactics (FLD) and foreign language teaching (FLT) in contemporary times.

The symposium will take into focus three central topics:

  1. Fundamental considerations and challenges for FLD and FLT in open societies
  2. Significance, function, and development of teaching materials and educational media
  3. Foreign language teachers’ and foreign language eductation researchers’ professionalism and implictions for language teacher education and professionalisation

The symposium will be organised in a workshop format. All participants will be asked to deliver a short input presentation. The call for proposals for presentations (abstract of approx. 300 words, exl. bibliography) will be open until September 30, 2025. Proposals should be sent to “englischdidaktik@hu-berlin.de”. Please note that the working language of the symposium will be German.
