Special Interest Group
“Research Methodology and Ethics”
Who we are
Our members bring a range of perspectives from fields such as linguistics, education, psychology, and sociology, which allows us to explore research methodologies and ethics from an interdisciplinary standpoint. We value collaboration, innovation, and critical thinking, and we are dedicated to exploring and addressing ethical issues that arise within various educational and linguistic contexts.
Our group includes both experienced and emerging researchers, enabling a rich exchange of ideas and mentoring opportunities. We strive to create an inclusive and reflective environment where members can challenge assumptions, develop new insights, and contribute to the broader discourse on ethical research. Together, we are committed to advancing research practices that respect the dignity and rights of participants, promote transparency, and uphold rigorous academic standards.
How we work
We prioritize a collaborative spirit, encouraging each member to bring their strengths to the table, and we believe that by working together, we can enhance the quality of our research processes and outcomes.
Our group values regular communication and structured, yet flexible, meetings where we discuss current projects, troubleshoot challenges, and brainstorm new ideas. We also engage in peer reviews, providing constructive feedback to one another to refine our work and uphold high standards of research integrity.
Beyond collaboration, we emphasize co-creation, actively working together to develop new methodologies, resources, and tools that can be used across various research projects. Our shared goal is to build a community of practice where continuous improvement is not only encouraged but embedded in our group culture. By leveraging each other’s insights and expertise, we strive to address complex research ethics more effectively and to make meaningful contributions to the broader research community.
Aims & Goals
We are dedicated to improving research practices by continuously reflecting on and refining our methodologies, with a strong emphasis on ethical considerations. We strive to empower each other through constructive feedback, shared learning, and mentorship, ensuring that all members feel valued and supported in their research journeys.
Additionally, we aim to advance the field by developing and promoting ethical frameworks that address current and emerging challenges in educational and language research.
Our goals include advocating for ethical standards and creating resources to strengthen ethical awareness among researchers. Through our collective efforts, we hope to make a positive impact on the research community and contribute to the development of responsible, transparent, and inclusive research practices.
Current focus
We are particularly interested in how these dilemmas manifest in real-world situations, such as conducting research with vulnerable populations, navigating issues of consent and privacy, and ensuring cultural sensitivity in data collection and analysis.
We aim to critically examine the ethical challenges that arise in various research settings, whether it’s in classroom environments, digital spaces, or cross-cultural studies. Our focus also includes understanding how power dynamics, researcher biases, and institutional pressures can influence ethical decision-making. By addressing these complex issues, we seek to develop practical solutions and best practices that researchers can apply across disciplines.
In addition to these core areas, we are exploring the impact of new technologies, such as AI and big data, on ethical research practices. We believe that by engaging with these contemporary challenges, we can contribute to the development of adaptable ethical frameworks that respond to the evolving nature of research in education and language.
Projects & activities
In addition to participating in ENROPE and Langscape colloquia, our Special Interest Group (SIG) also organizes activities tailored specifically for our members. We are open to collaboration with anyone interested in research ethics or those who bring different perspectives to the conversation.
